Here is the one and only extension for Thunderbird that I have ever used:
- Enigmail - allows you to use PGP/GPG along with your e-mails. I am not sure I can survive without this thing running in the background for me…

You should also try Mouse Gestures (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/39/) it comes in handy!
Since you’re a OS X user, when you get tired of Firefox and move on to a betterr browser (read Safari) you can also give it a look to Cocoa Gestures, http://pimpmysafari.com/plugins/cocoa-gestures-12
