Ok so for a whiile now I have been thinking about putting all of my spare harddrives into a single box and making myself a nice little NAS server. Now considering I have more or less 1TB of spare hdd space it would be a nice addition to my network. So today I went hunting for some OS solutions for this new addition to my arsenal and here i are the two winners. I am m probably going to go with the FreeNAS serversinc sinceit looks better suited for home use. Openfiler looks like something me and my boss might consider once we move our entire operations to AD user credentials. Anyone got any thoughts

FreeNAS seems pretty cool, I’ve also been thinking in getting a NAS for myself (specially to remotly mount /home on every computer at my lan) , but since I don’t really have the HDs around to get something besides 80 Gb (which IMO for a NAS just stinks:D, besides it couldn’t hold my homedir…yes, that’s true) I’ve been looking for some hardware solutions. Don’t know if you’re interessed, but if you are I can also share them with you.
At the beginning I also though about buying an external HD or internal HD, get them into an old box I have here and setting up myself the NAS system, but when I started analyzing prices I just saw it was almost the same. So why have another computer making noise if I could have a nice, small, cool box with 1Tb

Anyway I still haven’t decided myself, if you give it a try to FreeNAS let me know how it was.
Well my thought was to get an old server case (we have plenty of those around my office) and either just get a realtively cheap but decent board and power supply or just salvage one of the older boards I have here and then load FreeNAS. Right now the way my hdd space is setup is:
1.2Tb PATA of space sitting on my desk gathering dust
80gb SATA hdd in my main box
250 GB USB2 (PATA) hdd containing all my music (5gb free on that thing).
So a cheap board with usb2 controller and a decent sized PSU should do nicely for almost 1.5Tb of space, now I just need to get the money to spend on the hardware.
